Back by popular demand, Le Festival Bouge d'ici returns for its fourth edition from the 11th to the 19th of January. Celebrating Montreal's up-and-coming dance community, the festival packs a wide variety of events and shows taking place at Mainline Theatre. At its heart is the show Common Space : L'espace commun which provides "an opportunity for aspiring and up-and-coming choreographers to remount and re-work a short choreographic work with the help of a mentor". This edition's lucky participants are Kerwin Barrington, Laura Jayne Battcock, Audrey Bergeron, Patricia Gagnon, Marie-Andrée Gelac, Michaela Gerussi, Heather Lynn Macdonald, Axelle Munezero and Martine Bruneau, Auja Ragnarsdottir and Julie Tymchuk. Luckily for the young choreographers, they will be provided with production guidance and artistic mentorship. And best of all… drumroll begins… "There is no cost to the artist to be part of this showcase"! Now, that's a deal.
As I said earlier, each choreographer will be mentored by a more experienced choreographer in order for the piece to "undergo a development from its previous form to the final product presented as part of the performance". That's a good thing, it means the piece will be even better for us: cherished audience members. So who are these kind experts? This year, the generous mentors are David Albert-Toth, Amy Blackmore, Jacques Brochu, Allison Elizabeth Burns, Emily Gaultieri, holly Greco, Jody Hegel, Robin Henderson, Kelly Keenan, Lara Kramer, Tim Rodrigues, Maria Simone and Lael Stellick. Luckily for the audience, don't worry, the showcase won't be 4 hours long because the pieces must be no more than 10 minutes in length. That way we get the best of everyone and we're off to the next piece before we know it! So, are you ready to see what Montreal's fresh new generation of choreographers cooked up? If you are, get your tickets for one of the following dates : the 16th or 17th of January at 8pm, the 18th at 7pm or 10pm, or the 19th at 4pm.
For those interested in having a little more background on the festival, the organizers also managed to put together a series of workshops that were offered over the weekend such as a tap dancing workshop with Heather Keiller, a drawing workshop with Dr. Sketchy, a capoeira workshop with J.D. Papillon, yoga with Jo Willers and Sweet Moves Burlesque with Miss Sugarpuss! That way, people got to learn as well as get entertained! That's not all, they also opened the festival with the Bouge d'ici Most Promising Choreography Award recipients Sora Danse who were selected at the St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival. If that wasn't enough, they also organized Cinédanse Bouge d'ici featuring a series of short films centered around dance and movement themes. And for those who love real stuff, they launched Confabulation: "Montreal's premier all-true storytelling series. A night of stories about trying something from a new angle, or just starting out again, or just about the repeated attempts to get it right. Six all-true stories". Sounds pretty exciting!
Well now you know quite a bit about Bouge d'ici and if you're looking to party it up with a bunch of great people, you'll want to check out their Cabaret this Saturday, January 19th which "gives an opportunity for the Bouge d'ici Festival's mentors, planning committee and friends to show work in a party atmosphere. Following the performance is the Bouge d’ici closing night party with Dj Chris Godziuk. Dance games, contests and more"! There you have it, everything wraps up this week so don't miss out!
