Would you happen to know a company called Montréal Danse? Or perhaps a choreographer by the name of Benoît Lachambre? If you don't, this would be a great opportunity for you to discover them. The show Prismes is currently being presented at l'Agora de la danse until Saturday evening if you can manage to get your hands on some tickets. To get a bit of background on the company, artistic director Kathy Casey tells us what the team has been up: "We have 5 projects, including Prismes, that are touring. We did a marvelous tour in 6 cities in Mexico with Husk, our piece by George Stamos. S'envoler, our joint project with Créations Estelle Clareton will be touring in Quebec and Canada for 10 shows. Trois peaux, our piece with Jean-Sébastien Lourdais has a planned tour in Mexico and another joint project, The Drift, which has already touring in Germany, Italy and Ireland, will be seen at Parcours Danse in December." Sounds like a very busy company, wouldn't you say!
Now for the show, Kathy Casey tells us a bit more about its origins: "I believe the process began about 2 and a half years ago with a series of workshops that Benoît gave us so that we could understand and explore the various body systems he uses in creation and performance. We gradually began constructing sections and exploring how to frame the piece. Lucie Bazzo, who created the lighting design, was with us early in the process during residencies in theatres so that the exploration of color was integrating from the beginning.
One of the longest elements for us to master in this piece was how to use time. Benoît's work often needs a certain duration to have impact and yet this duration has the potential to have a dulling effect if not well defined. Therefore, one of the joys has been the discovery of the right rhythms and builds in Prismes. Another joy is how humor and pleasure are so present in the piece."
What's next for Montréal Danse after their performances at l'Agora? "Montréal Danse is working on three new projects this year as well as touring two other works. The new projects are a duet with Marie Béland, a co-production with Caroline Laurin-Beaucage and a male duet with Peter Quanz."
